Présence

Within his œuvre the composer Bernd Alois Zimmermann repeatedly crossed the line between music and other forms of art. In fantastic ways, his ballet blanc „Présence“ combines music, dance and literature.: within five „Scenes“ of this „white ballett“, each instrument of the piano-trio represents one figure from world literature: Migeuel de Cervantes' tragicomic knight Don Quichotte, the grotesque-evil tyrant Roi Ubu, from Alfred Jarrys drama, and Molly Bloom, from Ulysses by James Joyce, acme of sensual-erotic feminity. These characters transform into figures of a dance-performance, which gains an additional, poetic dimension through lines of poems by Paul Pörtner and citations from musical history. Presence – as a form of somnambulant floating between times, style and fantasy. Fascinated by Zimmermanns ambiguous, dazzling composition, composer Michael Denhoff wrote is Klaviertrio Nr.3 op. 74.1, in 1995. Instrumentation and title insinuate it to be the dark, magical counterpart of Zimmermanns ballet blanc. And there are more links to be discoverd between the two pieces, which makes it even more exciting to experience them both within one concert-performance between music and dance presented by Ensemble Ubu.
